Thank you – reflections after a year of trading

Simon Gray, owner at baker at SJG Foods, infront of a variety of his baked products.

I began writing this with a few minutes to spare inbetween bouts of Focaccia proofing and dough mixing. Reflecting on the fact that last month marked one whole year of SJG Foods and we’re here launching the second version of my website. Thank you to those of you who’ve followed my journey from the beginning, placed an order or who will join me in the future. I’m so grateful for all of you.

Lockdown baking turned business

It’s staggering, most of all to me, that my little lockdown project business has come this far. Growing to the extent where I’m now really stepping up my search for a premises and scratching my head thinking about how to fund the expansion that the business needs.

Due to not wanting to get too emotional about the whole thing, I’ll try not to go on too much. But, I am honestly so incredibly grateful for every single morsel of support I’ve received from my friends, family and customers over this first year of trading!

From delivering small bread orders to extended family as a trial run on the first weekend, to my first trade clients and agreeing to start stocking my bread. To the photoshoots with James Rouse Photography (thanks bud!) and the features in the local press and on Radio X! It’s honestly been such an amazing journey so far.

Joining the small business brigade

I’ve met some amazing local business owners, having become part of the awesome small business community through the power of Facebook, Instagram and local farmers markets. That’s something I’m really proud of!

As well as that, there’s been the real privilege of getting to know my customers, their families (sometimes their pets too) when I’ve been out on my deliveries. You guys have kept me motivated and inspired through your loyalty, custom and support. I will be forever indebted to you all and I can’t thank you enough.

What happens next?

So I guess it’s time to think of what comes next, besides taking SJG Foods to the next level…sorry but it’s not going to be Sourdough!
In all seriousness, there is a lot of exciting stuff I want to do in my second year! More markets, giveaways, advertising & marketing and of course – loads more baking!

Keep an eye out for what comes next, as ever I’ll share any news I have with you all!
Much love, sincere thanks and flour covered hugs,
Si x
